They most definitely were manufacturing First Variations in 1939 but by that time were probably well into the 4 digit serial number range.I have a 39A that i got from my father-in law. I was trying to find out the manufacture date, but the first character of the serial number is odd. (see attached image). It looks like it could be a D or a P, but it is missing part of the letter.
